About
Purpose of the CMAs
CMAs were established to improve decentralized decision making with the stakeholders in the management of water resources, thereby improve water resources management at a local level. The purpose is to ensure that the nation’s water resources are protected, used, developed, conserved, managed and controlled in a sustainable, efficient, and equitable manner. CMAs have inherited several functions as defined in section 80 of the National Water Act (NWA) since its establishment.
The functions include coordinating the related water use activities of water users and water management institutions within the Water Management Area. These include water use authorisation while promoting community participation in the protection, conservation, management and control of the water resources in our Water Management Area.
The Inkomati-Usuthu CMA was established in terms of section 78(1) of the National Water Act 36 of 1998 to manage water resources in the Inkomati-Usuthu Water Management Area.
The Inkomati-Usuthu CMA operates in various areas across the province of Mpumalanga with our water resources remotely located across Inkomati-Usuthu areas and centrally managed.
